Robin,

Today I am writing to you from Israel, where Janet and I along with our son David are leading a tour group of new and old friends. It is a very solemn day: from sundown on Sunday to sundown today is Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Day 2017. It's a time set aside to remember and reflect upon the approximately six million Jews killed by Nazi Germany and those who risked and gave their lives to try to save them. That's why today's must-read link is to Jewish blogger Jeff Dunetz, who explains why the Holocaust was uniquely horrific in history (as terrible as other genocides were, the Jews weren't killed because someone wanted to take their land or their power – they had none - but exterminated simply because of who they were.)

But more than that, Dunetz lists – in frightening detail – the many people and organizations that today are ushering hatred and anti-Semitism back into mainstream discourse, usually under the guise of anti-Zionism or criticizing Israel, but sometimes nakedly and unapologetically. Anti-Semitism is rearing its ugly head even at the highest levels of governments around the world and among allegedly "progressive" organizations that call their opponents "Hitler" at the drop of a hat, but think nothing of blaming all the world's problems on Israel and the Jews. The UN is a prime example, and I cannot express how gratifying it is to have a UN ambassador who is finally calling out that nest of hypocrites on its rampant anti-Semitism. Dunetz quotes Elie Wiesel, whose comment about Israel's security is sadly growing more urgent with each passing day: "We learned to trust our enemy's threats more than our friend's promises. "

Today, as we remember and say a prayer for the victims and heroes of the Holocaust, take time to read this column and see why it is more important than ever that we keep alive the slogan of the Warsaw Jewish resistance: "Never again!"

The French Election

By Mike Huckabee

This weekend's French elections didn't tell us definitively whether the French will follow the British and the Americans in overthrowing their smug establishment leaders, but it doesn't bode well for the elites. There will be a runoff election between centrist Emmanuel Macron (23.7%) and National Front candidate Marine LePen (21.7%) on the right. LePen has been vilified as a far-right extremist for her anti-immigration/enforce the borders views, but reports are that a number of women who fear the rise of militant Islam in the name of political correctness quietly supported her while refusing to admit it to pollsters. Those same polls show Macron with an early lead, but both the US presidential polls and the UK Brexit polls suggest that these days, a Magic 8-Ball might be a more reliable predictor of election outcomes. It's also not clear how well Macron's election eve comment that the French just have to get used to terrorist attacks as a part of daily life, coming right after a deadly attack on a police officer on the Champs Elysees in Paris, is going to go over with French voters in the long run.

But whoever wins, it will mark a sea change for France. Neither candidate represents a party that's held power in France, and those who did got shut out of the runoff. Of course, there are those who are already out protesting in the streets because their candidates lost. Most oppose any changes in the way France and the EU have been run in recent years. Let's pray that while they're out in the streets, they don't get shot by terrorists who were welcomed into France with open arms by the people they want to reelect.

Blame Obama

By Mike Huckabee

Stop the presses! Someone high up in the DNC actually came close to realizing why the Democrats lost, and it's not because American voters are secret sexists and Klansmen, or because of dirty tricks by Boris and Natasha. Rep. Keith Ellison blamed a former President who isn't George W. Bush for a change. He admitted that while Barack Obama was great at getting himself elected, he "could have been a better party leader," worked more closely with Congress and helped other Democrats more in their races. That does partly explain not only why the Democrats lost the presidency, but also why they've lost over 1,000 seats nationwide since 2008.

But I say Ellison only "came close" to realizing the truth because he's still clinging to a sacred scrap of party dogma that blinds him to harsh reality. It's always taken for granted by liberals, both in politics and the media, that when they lose, they just didn't do a good enough job of explaining how great their policies are. Poor dumb Americans voted against their own interests out of ignorance ("What's the matter with Kansas?" they famously wail, year after year.) Even here, when admitting Obama's part in his party's crumbling fortunes, Ellison felt compelled to add, "His legacy is the work he's done, which I believe is tremendous."

If the Democrats ever expect to start regaining power, they'll have to force themselves to confront the fact that voters knew their policies only too well and didn't think they were "tremendous." The only thing that was tremendous was their health insurance premiums after the Democrats stuck them with Obamacare. You could have explained to voters all day long about how wonderful it was to have open borders, stagnant economic growth, expensive but lousy health insurance, skyrocketing college tuition, trampled Constitutional rights, bloated government, rising debt, high taxes, job-killing regulations, PC thought police, weak-kneed foreign and defense policies, attacks on cops, the rise of ISIS, waves of unvetted Middle Eastern refugees and the thrill of being forced to live in your parents' basement until you're 40, and they still would not have bought it.

Voters are not ignorant. They're also not deaf, dumb and blind. The Democrats may be doomed to remain in the electoral wilderness until they finally take a tip from Shakespeare and realize that the fault lies not in their stars ("North Carolina didn't get enough tweets from Lena Dunham!"), but in themselves.
