SIDE BAR TO A VERY SUCCESSFUL SET OF 2 RALLIES AGAINST B.D.S. SUPPORTER ROGER WATERS.

THIS POINTS OUT THAT READERS HAVE to be very careful about what you read in publications.  In 27 EAST, a local Hamptons publication, in the week prior to the rallies, an article was published covering them.  The editor changed the story as filed by the reporter, changing a very few (meaningful) words - calling palestine a state.  The author said her copy as submitted to her editor, did not call palestine a state.  She introduced herself to me outside of the evening's Bay Street rally the night of 10/30.  She was very upset by the article as published.  She knew that I called the paper to complain about her article for the above reason.  It at the time she and I were speaking at Bay Street, I was standing with a seasoned reporter who agreed that editors frequently 'revise' reporter's text!!!  It's reader beware in this unholy war between those who love Israel and those who would see her emasculated.  (Shameful shades of the last Republican debate staged by WNBC with their panel of 'democratic' inquisitors this past week, or Romney's 3d debate disaster at the hands of a 'democratic' inquisitor)  As former President Jackson said: The Victor Writes the History!! Res ipsa gloriae mundi!

IDF WARNS SOLDIERS: BEWARE OF CIA RECRUITMENT: Channel 2 reports warning issued to all IDF personnel.

By JPOST.COM STAFF 11/01/2015 14:44

Channel 2 reported Sunday that the information security department, part of the IDF's intelligence force, issued a call to its officers and soldiers to beware of recruitment attempts by the CIA. The advisory called on soldiers to "be aware and report any unusual incidences."  The warning was issued to all officers and soldiers of the IDF.  Attached to the warning was an article from Israeli daily Yediot Aharonot chronicling a phenomenon circa 2012 in which post-army youngsters, upon arrival in the United States, were taken in for extensive questioning by American authorities in an attempt to recruit their services.  "Every security body fears having its confidential information leaked," an Israeli security source told Channel 2.  It remains unclear why the IDF chose to issue the warning now.  (JPOST / IMRA)

IMRA REPORT: IAF TARGETS HEZBOLLAH ASSETS IN SYRIA (DESPITE RUSSIAN DEPLOYMENT.  A list of possible targets: 1-The Lebanese and Syrian media said Saturday that Israel Air Force warplanes have attacked targets in Syria linked to the Lebanon-based terror group Hezbollah. Reports varied, however, on the exact targets and location of the strikes.  2-According to a report on the Lebanese Debate website, six IAF jets carried out the strike over the Qalamoun Mountains region of western Syria, and targeted weapons that were headed for Hezbollah.  3-Syrian opposition groups, for their part, claimed Israeli planes had attacked targets in the Damascus area, in two strikes in areas where Hezbollah and pro-Assad forces were centered.  4-Syrian media, however, said that Israeli warplanes hit several Hezbollah targets in southern Syria.  5-Syrian and Iranian media reported Friday that Russia was carrying out air strikes against anti-Assad rebel forces on the Syrian side of the Golan Heights border with Israel.   WHAT A HEAD FAKE!!

Israel's defense establishment declined to comment on the reports of the strikes, which would be the first since Russia boosted its involvement in the Syrian civil war.

THE UNITED STATES AND EGYPTIAN GOVERNMENTS WILL SOON RESUME THE CO-PRODUCTION OF M1A1 ABRAMS TANKS, weapon systems and accessories after signing a deal that formalized the collaboration between the Egyptian Tank Plant and US defense equipment manufacturer General Dynamics Land Systems.  The production is partly meant to fulfill a 2011 Egyptian order of 125 M1A1 Abrams tanks from General Dynamics, delivery of which was halted in July2013 when the US government froze military aid to protest the military coup that toppled Mohammed Morsi, the country's first democratically elected president.

I wonder what role President Obama's brother Malik, his unofficial envoy to Egypt, played in this?  If Hill and Bill could CASH IN....??

HOW CLOSE ARE EGYPT AND ISRAEL?

EGYPT HAS VOTED IN FAVOUR OF ALLOWING A GROUP OF SIX COUNTRIES, INCLUDING ISRAEL, TO BECOME MEMBERS OF THE UNITED NATIONS COMMITTEE ON THE PEACEFUL USES OF OUTER SPACE (COPUOS).  (IMRA)

Despite Egypt's reservations regarding Israel's membership in the committee, Egyptian representatives could not eliminate Israel without also voting against the other five countries, as the vote was merely for or against granting membership to all six nations, Egypt's foreign ministry spokesman Ahmed Abouzid said on Saturday.

Egypt decided to cast its vote because three Gulf states that Egypt was keen to support were among the group of six, Abouzid told state-run news agency MENA.

The three Arab countries on the list were UAE, Qatar, and Oman.  "Egypt's commitment to support the nominated Arab nations was the prime motive to vote for the decision," Abouzid said, in the wake of local criticism of Egypt for voting in Israel's favour.  A peace treaty has been in place between Egypt and Israel for decades.   However, the normalization of relations between the two countries is often publicly criticized.   Twenty-one countries, mostly Muslim-majority states such as Algeria, Yemen, Tunisia, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia, reportedly abstained from voting.

The Arabic hashtag, 'Egypt is voting for Israel' made the rounds on Twitter by users who objected to the decision. Some 117 countries voted for the list.

COPUOS is operating under the umbrella of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), whose task is to promote international cooperation in the peaceful uses of outer space.

NEWS REPORTS - IN BRIEF

1-SPY GAMES-U.S. v. ISRAEL!!!  Since 2012, hundreds of employees of the Israeli defense establishment encountered a strange phenomenon: the staff of the US embassy in Israel refused to grant them visas to enter the USA.

The Wall Street Journal revelation about the efforts made by the USA to uncover Israel's intentions regarding an attack against Iran well in advance is based on leaks from official US sources. The US government has an extensive resume of leaking sensitive defense information pertaining to Israel. Even the information attributing to Israel the attack against the Syrian nuclear reactor in Arak in September 2007 had come from Washington.

The story published by the Wall Street Journal has revealed that an Israeli aircraft had entered and exited the territory of Iran sometime in 2012, possibly as a trial run in the context of the preparations for a possible attack against the Iranian nuclear facility in Fordu.  These claims were supported by quotes of officials in Washington.  (Wall Street Journal:  "US espionage in Israel")

2-HAMPTONS SUPPORTS BDS RALLY AGAINST B.D.S. SUPPORTER-ROGER WATERS.

In brief: The rallies, 1-the first at 3-4pm where protesters walked the shopping strip on Main Street, Sag Harbor, signs held high, with leaflets ready for those who were interested; 2-the second between 7p and curtain time at 8p in front of Bay Street Theater, both were well attended.

Numbers of people told me that they had, or will cancel their Bay Street subscription, two people spoke to me as they turned away from the theater.  These are reference points, certainly not the complete results.

I saw 1 pocket of dissent.  At 7pm when I arrived, three young men, perhaps Arabic, screamed BDS inspired obscenities for about 15 minutes, then vanished.  Rabbi Leibel described another, a screed shouted at the protestors from a car racing up Main Street in the afternoon.

3-THE JORDANIAN CALL FOR VIDEO FEEDS FROM AL AQSA IS A PUZZLE.  Such feeds already exist coming out of Medina and Mecca.  It is questionable whether this will happen as the Al Aqsa as the Palestinians in the Waqf on the Temple Mount are just as adamant that there won't be cameras inside al Aqsa.  And for very practical reasons: They don't want the cameras to interfere with the use of the al Aqsa mosque as a place for preparing rocks, metal bars and firebombs and even its use as a launching point for attacks with these weapons.

4-MARTIN LUTHER WARNED THE GERMANS ABOUT APPEASING ISLAM. On Oct. 31, 1517, an Augustinian monk named Martin Luther posted 95 debate questions on the door of Wittenberg Church, which began the movement known as "the Reformation."  Dissention raged on the continent of Europe.  A mere twelve years later, the  35-year-old Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent sent 100,000 Muslim Turks to surround Vienna, Austria.

Martin Luther wrote: "The Turk is the rod of the wrath of the Lord our God. ... If the Turk's god, the devil, is not beaten first, there is reason to fear that the Turk will not be so easy to beat. ... Christian weapons and power must do it..."

  • "The migration crisis has the potential to destabilize governments, countries and the whole European continent. ... What we have been facing is not a refugee crisis. • "Meanwhile, refugees are still heading into Germany -- at a rate of around 10,000 a day. ... The decade after Ms. Merkel first came to power in 2005 now looks like a blessed period for Germany, in which the country was able to enjoy peace, prosperity and international respect, while keeping the troubles of the world at a safe distance. That golden era is now over." — Gideon Rachman, Financial Times.

1>SPY GAMES

The latest leaks by the US government regarding Israel were intended, presumably, to embarrass the  Israeli Minister of Defense and Prime Minister.   The tension between the Obama administration and Netanyahu continues and meanwhile, in Syria, the Russians are moving ahead with their military operation to re-consolidate the Assad regime.

Since 2012, hundreds of employees of the Israeli defense establishment encountered a strange phenomenon: the staff of the US embassy in Israel refused to grant them visas to enter the USA.

The applicants included IDF servicemen and employees of IMOD, Israeli defense industries and such intelligence agencies as ISA and Mossad.   Numerous testimonies indicated that the US embassy had a list of Israeli defense operatives, and entrance was denied to many of them despite the fact that they never encountered problems obtaining a visa in the past.

According to those testimonies, since 2012, some of the applicants received visas for just a few weeks after they had been 'given the runaround', while others were questioned upon their arrival in the USA. Some absurd situations arose. For example, members of the Israeli delegation to the USA were forced to leave the USA for Canada and have their visas renewed in that country, since their visas for staying on US soil had been renewed only for very short periods of time, again and again (or refused).

At the time, the US embassy in Israel refused to provide any explanations regarding this "Visa Refusal Policy", not even in response to a question submitted to the embassy by this writer, but the reason is being clarified in the last few days: a revelation by the Wall Street Journal last weekend maintains that the USA initiated a massive effort to obtain information from employees of the Israeli defense establishment in an attempt to find out whether Israel intended to attack the nuclear facilities in Iran. One of the methods being mentioned was an attempt to extract the information from Israelis seeking visas to enter the USA, and the questioning officials were not employees of USCIS (US Citizenship and Immigration Services) but investigators of the CIA (US Central Intelligence Agency) working undercover.

The story published by the Wall Street Journal has further revealed that an Israeli aircraft had entered and exited the territory of Iran sometime in 2012, possibly as a trial run in the context of the preparations for a possible attack against the Iranian nuclear facility in Fordu. These claims were supported by quotes of officials in Washington.

According to the same officials, the objective of the flight was to practice the airlifting and landing of IDF commando forces in the area of the nuclear facility for the purpose of capturing it. These officials base their claim on an intercepted transmission out of which the information regarding the Israeli trial was obtained.

On the other hand, Israel has a record of failing to inform the USA in advance of significant military moves. For example, Israel went to such great lengths trying to keep the attack against the Iraqi nuclear reactor (mainly in June 1981) that the commander of IAF, Major-General David Ivry, spent the day prior to the attack with American colleagues in Naples, Italy, just to "put them to sleep". A message was sent to the USA only after the IAF strike aircraft had completed their mission (at least before the operation was reported in the media).

According to all of the estimates in Israel, the latest report by the Wall Street Journal was intended to embarrass Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon before his recent visit to the USA, which began on Monday and ended on Thursday (earlier than planned, owing to the tense situation in Israel) as well as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who will travel to Washington in early November.

This article conveys the impression that the USA does not trust the Israeli judgment, which could have led to a serious deterioration of the situation in the entire Middle East (and even beyond this region).

It is important to understand, however, that the story, titled "US espionage in Israel", does not amount to actual espionage but conforms to a more moderate professional term – collection of information. Admittedly, the methods employed in order to collect information in Israel, as reported by the Wall Street Journal, were extremely unusual, but the Israeli defense establishment has assumed anyway, for years now, that the Americans are gathering any information they can lay their hands on. They employ the world's most extensive monitoring network, code named Echelon, and use supercomputers to sort every sliver of information passing through the Internet in order to obtain the coveted 'golden nuggets' of information

The relations between the Israeli and US defense establishments have already experienced more severe espionage scandals, or even suspicions of "intensified collection of information", not just in the context of the case of Jonathan Pollard, who is expected to be released from prison after 30 years.

Lieutenant-Colonel (res.) Gideon Mitchnik, who had served at the executive office of the Defense Minister during the previous decade and subsequently served as the official historian of the IDF Intelligence Directorate, has reminded us that the Americans had accused Israel, more than a decade ago, of spying in the context of a less well-known affair known as the "AIPAC Espionage Scandal". In that case, the FBI arrested Lawrence Franklin, a senior employee at the executive office of the US Secretary of Defense and a former USAF officer, and accused him of spying for Israel within the US government. It was alleged that Franklin supplied sensitive information to two AIPAC officials – Steven Rosen and Keith Weissman.

Naor Gilon, an Israeli diplomat in charge of relations with the US Congress at the Israeli embassy in Washington, was also implicated in the suspicions.  The affair eventually came to nothing after five years, but only after Franklin had paid a hefty personal price. This is only an example of the fact that both parties assume that the effort to collect information never ceases.

High Tension

The new "espionage scandal" revealed recently is a late manifestation of the heightened US-Israeli tensions surrounding the "Iranian Issue", which led to a profound rift between leaders Barack Obama and Benjamin Netanyahu (that is not expected to be mended during their forthcoming meeting).

The Americans did everything they could to obtain information about Israel's intentions, while employing the "carrot and stick" method. On the positive side, they made an unprecedented attempt to establish warm relations with the IDF Chief of Staff in the years when an attack against Iran was regarded as imminent: until 2011, the US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Martin Dempsey, had met IDF Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi not less than 13 times, showering the Israeli general with warmth and goodwill. When Ashkenazi's replacement, Lieutenant-General Benny Gantz, came to Washington for the first time as IDF Chief of Staff, a special band played all his favorite songs (presumably, the Americans had foreknowledge of Gantz's musical taste…).

On the less pleasant side, the Americans focused on the questioning of former members of IDF special operations units, and according to recent reports (by Yediot Aharonot), in one case Israel submitted an official protest to the USA pursuant to a less-than-innocent questioning of an Israeli citizen at a US airport that lasted not less than ten hours. In the past, it was reported that the USA deployed on the roof of the US embassy in Tel-Aviv covert monitoring installations the likes of which were seen on the roofs of other US embassies around the world.

USA, Russia

A matter of timing: whether this recent affair is about espionage or just about 'collection of information', these reports did not really cloud Ya'alon's visit to the USA this week. The visit went ahead as planned and according to the reports – the atmosphere was very pleasant. Senior Israeli defense officials claim that the relations between the defense establishments of Israel and the USA are closer today than ever before, as opposed to the hostile wind blowing toward Israel out of the White House and State Department (where the leak to the Wall Street Journal must have originated).

Meanwhile, back in Israel, the bar of violence in the territories seemed to have dropped significantly and violence among Israeli Arabs has subsided almost completely. However, estimates maintain that tranquility is still a far-off prospect and that the terrorist attacks will continue for a long time, with occasional "peaks" – renewed waves of surging violence.

A lot of attention has been paid to occurrences in Syria: while Israel and the USA conducted strategic discussions in Washington, a historic event took place when the Russian Air Force coordinated its strikes with the IAF. The understandings regarding that coordination were achieved last month, during the visit of Prime Minister Netanyahu to Moscow, on which he was accompanied by the IDF Chief of Staff and Head of the IDF Intelligence Directorate.

At the same time, Israeli and US operations associated with Syria were coordinated, too. The world press has reported this week that the Russians employed high-power electronic transmitters out of a submarine in the Mediterranean. These reports seem to be accurate and the Russian submarine was probably detected by Israel. The electronic warfare systems were probably employed by the Russians in order to defend their new bases in Syria as well as their aircraft in the air over Syria. Apparently, the state-of-the-art capabilities demonstrated by the Russians this week have taken intelligence circles in the West by surprise.

TEXT by Karl Grossman and PIX by Janet Lehr

Proud supporters of Israel rallied this past Friday; Jews and non-Jews from all over the South Fork trekked to Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor on Friday night to protest The performance of an anti-Israel musician.

The thoroughly detestable Roger Waters, well known for the hate speech he spews out attacking Israel, was scheduled to perform.  Scheduling Waters was certainly poor judgment especially in the Hamptons where such Hamptons notables as Bon Jovi, Madonna and Howard Stern, top notable and quotable stars, have said that they would never perform with him, specifically because of his anti-Semitism.  Earlier this year, when Bon Jovi announce that he would be performing in Israel, Roger Waters penned a long open letter in Salon to Bon Jovi slamming the group ahead of their October 3rd concert in Tel Aviv.  Waters has routinely called on his fellow artists to boycott performing in Israel.

Our campaign: Boycott Roger Waters: Anti-Semite, Anti-Israel was gratifying in its clear success.  Karl Grossman, writing in the Times of Israel, described the very active scene.

"Demonstrators were at the theatre both in the afternoon and evening when the Waters performance occurred.  "Someone has to speak out. We can't let ourselves be bullied," explained Rabbi Leibel Baumgarten of Chabad of East Hampton. "That's what happened in the '30s and look how the world suffered. No one reacted." Rabbi Leibel was holding a sign reading: "Learn the Truth.  ISRAEL is NOT an apartheid country." It referred people to BDS movement/roger waters.

One sign, held by Sharon Grindle of Southampton, read: "ROGER WATERS  ANTI-ISRAEL  ANTI-SEMITE." Ms. Grindle commented: "As a Jew, I love the State of Israel. Waters travels around the world trying to influence people and because he is a celebrity, people think he knows something—but he doesn't know anything."

Another demonstrator, Dr. Emilie Kutash, professor of philosophy at St. Joseph's College Long Island, said: "I suggest people read their history and read current events and learn the facts and learn that Israel is the victims of thousands of rockets, stabbings, murders and other attacks for decades—Israel is a victim, not a perpetrator." Dr. Kutash was distributing literature.

One flier at the protest included the line: "NEVER AGAIN IS NOW!"

Osnat Gad of Southampton, originally from Afghanistan to where her family and other Jewish families escaped from Iran, although, she said, none are now left there–declared: "The state of Israel has to survive. We need a country for the Jews. We don't want to go back to ghettoes." She held a sign declaring: "BDS IS A HATE CRIME".

Said Edie Lutnick of Sagaponack: "Roger Waters is a raging anti-Semite and he doesn't separate his politics from his music."

Janet Lehr of East Hampton said: "Everybody who is here loves Israel and wants to protect Israel. Anti-Semitism is an age-old disease. BDS takes it to a new level."

Among the protesters Friday, was a major figure in non-profit fund-raising in the New York Metropolitan Area, Linda Shapiro of Sag Harbor, who said Bay Street Theatre's enabling the appearance of Waters and its refusal to cancel his appearance in the face of the outrage it caused could have an unfortunate impact on its fund-raising. "They could have cancelled it," she said. Ms. Shapiro noted that a few days earlier she was with Janet Lehr while Ms. Lehr was on the phone with Tracy Mitchell, executive director of Bay Street Theatre, and Ms. Mitchell was arguing that the performance was a matter of  'artistic freedom'.  I said, "Do you want the Ku Klux Klan at Bay Street next?" Ms. Shapiro declared: "Tonight, I'm proud of our community.  And I'm proud to be Jewish. I'm proud of everyone who is here."

The Simon Wiesenthal Center, the leading human rights organization famed for its decades of hunting down Nazis, joined in the situation issuing a statement last week headed, "Wiesenthal Center: New Yorkers Should Give Anti-Israel Boycott Leader Roger Waters what he Deserves—an Empty Theatre."

The Simon Wiesenthal statement quoted its dean and founder, Rabbi Marvin Hier, and its associate dean, Abraham Cooper, saying: "Roger Waters is an entertainer who hates the Jewish State of Israel. He is a major promoter of the anti-peace Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. This extreme anti-Israel campaign has never helped a single Palestinian as it is designed only to demonize and denigrate the lone democracy in the Middle East and the only society in the region where freedom of speech and artistic expression flourish."

The Simon Wiesenthal Center statement went further: "Give Roger Waters the reception he deserves, an EMPTY HALL"

Larry Silverman of East Hampton, who worked on the protest at Bay Street Theatre, said "This is just the beginning of what we intend to do. We intend to start a worldwide campaign to protest Roger Waters wherever he is. This is just the beginning of standing up to Roger Waters and what he stands for."

Meanwhile, Congressman Lee Zeldin, whose district includes Sag Harbor, has commented: "I'm proud of our community's reaction to this performance. Roger Waters has been so wrong on his stances on Israel so many times and on so many levels." Zeldin, of Shirley, is the only Jewish Republican in the House of Representatives.

And New York State Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele, Jr., a Sag Harbor resident, is pointing to a resolution passed unanimously by the State Assembly on June 18 titled: "Rejecting the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Movement." It was approved by all 150 members of the State Assembly after a debate in which, notes Thiele, the statements of speakers were "all favorable" to the resolution.

It declares that the BDS movement is "damaging to the causes of peace, justice, equality, democracy, and human rights for all peoples in the Middle East," and the members of the State Assembly "oppose all attempts to economically and politically isolate Israel within the international arena, and oppose efforts to assault the legitimacy of Israel as the sovereign homeland of the Jewish people."

Rabbi Leibel was holding a sign reading: "Learn the Truth. ISRAEL is NOT an apartheid country." It referred people to BDS movement/roger waters. ... Protesters at Bay Street Theatre considered Waters both anti-Israel and an anti-Semite.

In the face of the protest, some ticket holders turned away from the theater, other protesters said they would be discontinuing their season ticket subscriptions.  Actions have consequences.  Maligning the Jewish state is both senseless and baseless. IDF aid missions help thousands around the world: Over the last 26 years, Israel has sent out 15 aid missions to countries struck by natural disasters. Immediately upon arriving in these countries, IDF doctors set up field hospitals. Overall, medical care was given to more than 2,300 people in afflicted areas, and 220 were saved from certain death.

The Jewish State is home in Israel.  That affords its IDF the ability to fullfil the very particular mitzvot to give aid to the stranger.  Israeli aid missions help thousands around the world: Over the last 26 years, Israel has sent out 15 aid missions to countries struck by natural disasters. Immediately upon arriving in these countries, IDF doctors set up field hospitals. Overall, medical care was given to more than 2,300 people in afflicted areas, and 220 were saved from certain death...  No other nation has met this level of aid. It doesn't come without cost, Israel quite modestly, helps when and where help is needed.

3>JORDANIAN CALL FOR VIDEO FEEDS FROM AL AQSA A PUZZLE

Dr. Aaron Lerner -

IMRA  : Weekly Commentary:

28 October 2015

Here's the score:

The Jordanians are adamant that cameras will broadcast to the world via internet  24/7 from inside the al Aqsa mosque, just as there are such broadcasts from the two holiest sites of Islam

Mecca

https://youtu.be/VopbGPJVkzM

and Medina

https://youtu.be/4OoKpZWJASY

[The above urls are just examples of the many 24/7 live video feeds available from these two locations]

The Palestinians in the Waqf on the Temple Mount are just as adamant that there won't be cameras inside al Aqsa.  And for very practical reasons:

They don't want the cameras to interfere with the use of the al Aqsa mosque as a place for preparing rocks, metal bars and firebombs and even its use as a launching point for attacks with these weapons.

And the cameras would indeed interfere:  not only would the video feeds make it bad PR to use the al Aqsa mosque for violent activity, the Israel police would most definitely exploit the feeds to identify and prosecute those who engage in violent activities.

If Jordan succeeds in imposing its will this will be an unprecedented victory for Jordan.  And as the source of the camera feeds, Jordan would have the opportunity to add to the feed whatever images [flag of Jordan?

face of the king of Jordan?] it wants and whatever ticker tape and audio it wants.

On the other hand, if Jordan fails its failure will be anything but a secret.

It will be most interesting to see in the coming weeks if the Jordanians made a colossal error in their assessment of their ability to pull this off despite Palestinian objections or if they have substantially more weight in this holy location than most observers thought they had.

4>MARTIN LUTHER WARNED CHRISTIANS ABOUT APPEASING ISLAM 500 YEARS AGO!

William Federer

On Oct. 31, 1517, an Augustinian monk named Martin Luther posted 95 debate questions on the door of Wittenberg Church, which began the movement known as "the Reformation."

In 1521, 34-year-old Martin Luther was summoned to stand trial before the most powerful man in the world, 21-year-old Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. Charles V of Spain's empire spanned nearly 2 million square miles across Europe, the Netherlands, the Far East, Philippines, North and South America, and the Caribbean.

At the Diet of Worms, Charles V initially dismissed Luther's theses as "an argument between monks" and simply declared Martin Luther an outlaw. Martin Luther was hid by Frederick of Saxony in the Wartburg Castle, where he translated the New Testament into German.

Charles V's unruly troops sacked Rome and imprisoned Pope Clement VII for six months. He oversaw the Spanish colonization of the Americas, and began the Counter-Reformation. He eventually responded to the pleadings of the priest Bartolome' de Las Casas and outlawed the enslavement of native Americans.

During this time, Muslim Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent invaded Europe on land and sea. In 1529, 35-year-old Suleiman the Magnificent sent 100,000 Muslim Turks to surround Vienna, Austria.

Martin Luther wrote: "The Turk is the rod of the wrath of the Lord our God. ... If the Turk's god, the devil, is not beaten first, there is reason to fear that the Turk will not be so easy to beat. ... Christian weapons and power must do it..."

Martin Luther continued: "(The fight against the Turks) must begin with repentance, and we must reform our lives, or we shall fight in vain. (The Church should) drive men to repentance by showing our great and numberless sins and our ingratitude, by which we have earned God's wrath and disfavor, so that He justly gives us into the hands of the devil and the Turk."

In an attempt to unite the Holy Roman Empire against the Ottoman Muslims, Charles Vagreed to a truce recognizing the Protestants, as Eric W. Gritisch wrote in "Martin – God's Court Jester: Luther in Retrospect" (Philadelphia: Fortress, 1983, p. 69-70): "Afraid of losing the much-needed support of the German princes for the struggle against the Turkish threat from the south, Emperor Charles V agreed to a truce between Protestant and Catholic territories in Nuremberg in 1532. ... Thus the Lutheran movement was, for the first time, officially tolerated and could enjoy a place in the political sun of the Holy Roman Empire."

As the Islamic threat intensified, reformer John Calvin wrote to Philip Melanchthon in 1543 ("Selected Works of John Calvin: Tracts & Letters," I: 373): "I hear of the sad condition of your Germany! ... The Turk again prepares to wage war with a larger force. Who will stand up to oppose his marching throughout the length and breadth of the land, at his mere will and pleasure?"

Followers of the reformers, who "protested" certain doctrines, were generally referred to as "Protestants." Some Protestants refused to help Charles V who was defending Europe from the Muslim invasion. Finally, Charles V made a treaty with the German Lutheran princes by signing the Peace of Augsburg, Sept. 25, 1555, ceasing the religious struggle between Lutherans and Catholics. A line in the treaty, "cuius regio, eius religio," allowed each king to decide what was to be believed in his kingdom.

A month later, Oct. 25, 1555, suffering from severe gout, Charles V abdicated his throne and lived the rest of his life secluded in the monastery of Yuste, leaving his son Philipe II to rule.

As different kings in Europe chose different denominations for their kingdoms, millions migrated from one country to another simply for conscience sake, and eventually spilled over into the colonies in America.

New York University Professor Emeritus Patricia Bonomi, in her article "The Middle Colonies as the Birthplace of American Religious Pluralism" wrote: "The colonists were about 98 percent Protestant."

Of the 56 signers of the Declaration, most were Protestant, with the notable exception of Catholic Charles Carroll of Maryland.

British statesman Edmund Burke addressed Parliament, 1775: "All Protestantism ... is a sort of dissent. But the religion most prevalent in our Northern Colonies is a refinement on the principle of resistance; it is the dissidence of dissent, and the Protestantism of the Protestant religion."

Samuel Adams stated when he signed the Declaration of Independence: "This day, I trust, the reign of political Protestantism will commence."

Martin Luther, who died in 1546, wrote: "I am much afraid that schools will prove to be the great gates of hell unless they diligently labor in explaining the Holy Scriptures, engraving them in the hearts of youth."
